It works.

Here is your route.

Simpler explanation:

Drive from LA to El Paso, Texas on Hwy 10.

Cross the border to Ciudad Juarez.

Take Hwy 45 to Torreon.

From there Hwy 40 heads southwest to Durango.

Another possible route is to take Hwy10 as far as Tucson.

Take 19 to Nogales, Arizona.

Cross the border to Nogales, Mexico.

Take Hwy 15 to Mazatlan.

Take Hwy 40 over El Espinazo de Diablo (the Devil's Backbone) to Durango. It's very curvy, but considered the most beautiful mountain highway route in Mexico.|||See site below. add a few hrs to the time. you may be able to vary your route in the U.S. a little, but it would be wise to stick to the out laid out to Durango. You should also get a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas...at a large book store or Amazon.com. And you will need Mexican car ins and a Mexican car permit.
